Real Book Review: I Kissed Dating Goodbye

I Kissed Dating Goodbye by Josh HarrisI Kissed Dating Goodbye
Review by Rachel MôK, RTF Staff Writer

I first read this book when I was 14 years old, well most people think I was weird, why? Because that is THE AGE when “dating” in High School is cool, apparently its the “in” thing. I mean why would a 14-year-old girl be thinking about a long term commitment, in other words marriage. All she would think is, “oh that guy is cute, I think I like him.”

Sadly, high school flings are getting more common these days, in fact I use to think that
was alright, part of teenage life and growing up, but I have changed that mind-set. (more…)

Real Devo: Every Rose Has Its Thorns

Every Rose has its Thorns

by Rachel Mok

Just like every rose has its thorns, I have my rough edges as well. Yeah we were “born” with our weaknesses, like they always say you don’t have to teach a baby to do something bad, they just do it. But, why do we always use that as our excuse? Shouldn’t we always strive for the best, aim for perfection? We can’t with our human nature, that’s why we need God! On the other hand, we lack the that faith and trust, so how does that work anyway? (more…)

Real Devo: Trusting God by Rachel Mok

Trusting God – A personal story

by Rachel Mok, RTF Staff Writer

Every time when a friend of mine is going through a tough time, the first thing that comes out of my mouth as a form of encouragement is “trust God, because He’s the God of the impossible.” However, when I turn the table around, and I am in the one going through a tough situation, all I can say is…easier said than done!

Here the story begins, last year we started a mini youth ministry in our high school, gathering Christians in the school to come together to fellowship every Friday afternoon. Our vision is to reach our school for Christ. And because most of our members graduated last year, our numbers were really little this year. So the ex-students continued to go back and serve to build up the group. As a team, we learnt to trust in God, to persevere on to continue this ministry, despite the small numbers. Even if its means leading worship every week, we did it! However we decided to trust God for 30 committed members and 4 salvations this semester. We constantly prayed, to see God’s our work in this ministry. Fives weeks into this semester has passed, we have seen 20 regulars to the group and 1 salvation so far! We are really amazed how God multiplied us by double.

It is true power to see God move in the lives of the youths as they grow and desire to serve God. We have also learnt that prayer without faith is useless; we have to pray with trust and expectancy! So I would like to end of this verse with:

Consider it pure joy, my brothers, whenever you face trials of many kinds, because you know that the testing of your faith develops perseverance. – James 1:2-3

You may be going through a challenging period of your life, but don’t lose faith, instead put your trust in God because he is really the God of the impossible and he can makes things happen if its according to His Word. I personally I have experienced the power of God, and you can to!

Real Thoughts: RTF Staff Writer Rachel Mok

Rachel Mok, RTF Staff Writer

He’s the beginning and the end.

It’s the beginning of a brand new year, it’s this time when everyone excitedly set their New Year resolution goals and strive for their best to achieve it. I have been causally asking friends around as to what this New Year has installed for them, and how they are using it to their advantage. Interestingly, one friend shared that he wants this New Year to be a fresh start, a new opportunity to live life again without hanging on to the past. The more he shared, I realized that he has gone through some tough times; sadly he doesn’t know God personally yet, and without God he’s still going to struggle.

It then came to my realization of how fortunate I am to have God by my side 24/7, because if anyone is in Christ, he is a new creation; the old has gone, the new has come (2 Cor 5:17).

He’s the reason we breathe, the One who set us free. He allows us to wake up to a brand new day, to have the strength to face what’s ahead. And this song describes everything God is to me, He’s the reason why I can wake up with a smile every morning without fearing what’s ahead.

I AM by Nichole Nordeman

Pencil marks on a wall
I wasn’t always this tall,
You scattered some monsters from beneath my bed,
You watched my team win, You watched my team lose,
You watched when my bicycle went down again,
And When I was weak unable to speak,
still I could call You by name, and I said
“Elbow healer, Superhero, come if You can,”
and You said “I am”
Only 16, life is so mean, what kind of curfew is at ten PM
You saw my mistakes,
You watched my heart break
Heard when I swore I’d never love again
When I was weak, unable to speak,
still I could call You by name, and I said
“Heart-ache Healer, Secret-keeper,be my Best Friend”
and You said “I am”
You saw me wear white, by pale candlelight,
I said forever to what lies ahead two kids and a dream,
with kids that can scream too much it might seem
when it’s two AM when I am weak, unable to speak,
still I will call You by name. “Oh Shepherd, Savior, Pasture-maker,hold on to my hand,”
and You say “I am.”
The winds of change,
And circumstance blow in and all around
us so we find a foothold that’s familiar,
And bless the moments that we feel You nearer
Life had begun, I was woven and spun,
You let the angels dance around the throne,
who can say when,
But they’ll dance again, when I am free
and finally headed home I will be weak, unable to speak,
still I will call You by name “Creator, Maker, Life-sustainer,
Comforter, Healer, My Redeemer,
Lord and King, Beginning andthe End,
I am, yes, I am.”

Real Devo: True Faith

Let’s welcome Rä¢HÉl MôK, our international RTF staff member. She lives in Australia, but is from Singapore. Rachel will be blogging once or twice a month on RTF.

Today she gets real about True Faith.

True Faith
by Rä¢HÉl MôK, 17

Faith may become to us like a promise on demand and we operate it through formulae, mechanisms and techniques. The truth is, no matter how great our faith may be, God is the source of our answered prayer and cannot be manipulated in any way.

People often misunderstand what faith is. Recently, I just attended a church seminar on “True Faith”. A particular lesson taught about a number of different misunderstandings that people have about faith. Having true faith does not imply that we should not or are not supposed to do anything at all. So here I am going to share some common misunderstandings about faith, and my major struggle I go through.

The first common misunderstanding is that “faith works like magic to enable us to receive whatever we desire”, that is not true. Faith is not for getting the things that we want. We should not get confused with faith and God’s power to change things. Faith is to trust God even when we do not exactly understand what God’s plan actually is.

Secondly, people believe that “unanswered prayer is a sign of lack of faith”, which is false again. For example, I am currently praying for a scholarship for my university studies, however if God decides not to give me the scholarship, it doesn’t mean that my faith is weak. Although it is true that we must let God do His part, we must do our part as well. In this case, it would mean I have to study hard for my exams. Faith should be centered on God’s will for our lives. Our faith may increase the possibility of God fulfilling our prayer request, but if God doesn’t answer, it doesn’t mean we are lack of faith.

Finally, some also think that “lack of prosperity is a sign of lack of faith”, however prosperity has nothing to do with faith but it has something to do with what God has planned for our lives. Material wealth is not equivalent to spiritual wealth. We should be contented with what God has blessed us with. As stated in the bible - For where your treasure is, there your heart will be also. So we shouldn’t be so focused on material wealth.

BIO: Rachel is 17, originally from Singapore, but studying high school in Australia and going on to study the bachelor of social work in University of Queensland next year.
