real discussion: what’s the big deal with porn?

pornography [pawr-nog-ruh-fee]

n

1. writings, pictures, films, etc., designed to stimulate sexual excitement.

2. the production of such material.

A heated class discussion was underway re: the porn industry in the United States – particularly porn on the internet. Should the government censor it? Who’s to say where “the line” should be drawn? What about freedom of expression?

Suddenly, a small blond girl in the front row burst out “What’s the big deal with porn anyway? I mean people can choose to watch it or not watch it. And people can choose to make videos and have pictures taken!”

That got me thinking.

At first glance, her argument seems to make a lot of sense. Is porn okay? Is it just another medium of expression? A means to make money? Something people enjoy watching/looking at? Is it harmless?

Do you think porn is a big deal? Why or why not?

It is a HUGE deal. The secular world may not think it is, but even for them, the consequences are devastating to individuals and families. It’s hurt me and many people I know, and it’s not something to take lightly. From a psychological perspective, it creates an addiction, which literally changes brain chemistry. But it also destroys the soul. Even if someone says it doesn’t affect them negatively, I’d bet that they struggle with feeling guilty, dirty or some aspect of that. Why else would it be such a secretive topic, especially among Christians?
