real devo: get up and go

The Bible is full of stories in which God asked His children to “get up and go!”

Recently, He’s been having me dig a little deeper into those very stories. And He’s boggled my mind with this fact: When the Lord asked His people to go, He rarely told them where they were going!

“The Lord had said to Abram, ‘Leave your country, your people, and your father’s household and go to the land I will show you.” Genesis 12:1

He told Abram and Sarai to pack up and move away from all they had ever known. Without even a penciled outline of an itinerary or any word about what they could expect!

Moses is another one. God told Moses, “So now, go. I am sending you to Pharaoh to bring my people the Israelites out of Egypt.” Exodus 3:10

God also gave this very command to Paul in the New Testament:

“What shall I do, Lord?” Paul asked.

“Get up,” the Lord said, “and go…There you will be told all that you have been assigned to do.” Acts 22:10

I’m a freshman in college this year and I’m staying at home. I’m not heading off to live on campus. God didn’t ask that of me.

But His call to “get up and go” is still alive in my heart. He is asking me to “get up and go” work for a degree so I can pursue this dream He has planted in my heart.

He is asking me to “get up and go” become involved in my church by teaching children about Him.

He is asking me to “get up and go” tell others about Him.

What does God’s “Get up and go” look like in your life? He may be asking you to “get up and go” love your neighbor, give to the poor, smile at someone, or ask forgiveness.

Maybe, just maybe, He is asking you, like He asked Abraham, Moses, and Paul, to “get up and go” without giving you the specifics.

When the questions, the doubts, and the fears start knocking at the door of my heart, I take encouragement from the stories of these men and women who obeyed God’s call. It was always worth it.

Abraham became the father of a great nation.

Moses led that nation to freedom from their oppressors.

Paul preached the good news of Jesus so that all people could be grafted into the family of God.

Answering God’s call will always have eternity-altering results (though we may not always see it).

Leslie Ludy says, “Our mission field is wherever we are at the present moment. God might not call you to Haiti. He might not ask you to live in Africa or India or go work in the ghettos of New York. But He will ask you to do something”. Sacred Singleness, page 131).

Where is God calling you?

Do you have the daring to “get up and go?”
