Dear Halee,
I’m almost too ashamed to say it, but sometimes I cheat. I’m really bad at math so I do it to pass. I want to stop, but it’s so hard. What do I do?
- Alex*
hey Alex,
I can totally relate to trouble with math – I’ve never been very good at it! I’m so proud of you for admitting that you struggle with cheating. Sometimes that’s the hardest part – admitting it.
Have you asked anyone for help? I had a couple friends who were better at math so we would have study groups sometimes. That was definitely helpful for me. And the more confident you are in a subject, the easier it will be to avoid cheating. So right now, finding someone to help you in math is really important – whether it’s a friend, parent, or teacher.
Memorizing a verse could also be useful when you start to feel weak. The verse could be about temptation, like 1 Cor. 10:13 (NIV): “No temptation has overtaken you except what is common to mankind. And God is faithful; he will not let you be tempted beyond what you can bear. But when you are tempted, he will also provide a way out so that you can endure it.”
Or it could be something that reminds you who you are like, “For those who are led by the Spirit of God are the children of God.” (Romans 8:14, NIV), or “You, dear children, are from God and have overcome them, because the one who is in you is greater than the one who is in the world.” (1 John: 4:4, NIV).
Find a verse or two that works for you and reminds you of why cheating is a bad idea. It could help you keep a broader perspective when you’re tempted to focus on the moment.
Also, pray about it – let God know all that you’re feeling and ask for His help. I know He wants to help you overcome this and become more like the child of God that you are.
I’m proud of you for working on this, Alex! I’ll be praying that God gives you the strength to focus on Him and His plan for your life.

I so relate to you now! I’ve been so bad at math I always passed with low C’s in the past. I’ve always thought about cheating though and I admit, sometimes I did too. But! The thing was, I was tired of “passing a test” with someone else’s knowledge. I wanted to learn and do things for myself and I knew I needed to do well to get into college and using other people’s work wouldn’t help sustain when I actually am in college. So, I figured I needed study, study study and actually DO my homework. Ask questions non stop when I don’t even get the simplest of things.
When you start getting passing grades on your tests and quizzes you feel so good that you did it yourself
