Rahab lived in Jericho.
I did, too.
Rahab was imprisoned behind the thick, mammoth walls. Unable to get out. Unable to run free beneath the desert sun.
I, too, was a captive.
I was enslaved to the power of sin. Unable run free beneath the healing rays of the sun. Unable to get free from my pain.
Rahab was a harlot. She sold herself for the means to keep herself alive. What horror, what pain each day and night held.
I too was a harlot.
I prostituted myself to whatever promised to fulfill me. Beauty, attention, popularity, fame, fortune, security, control… but they never made good on their promises. I idolized and worshipped them, but they betrayed me.
Rahab had an extraordinary encounter with two Jewish men that changed her life forever. She’d heard of a God who could rescue her from her captivity. She wanted this God to save her from her desperate situation. She ached for the tales she had heard about this God to be true.
Then there it was –the proof that she needed. The answer she had longed for for so long. The visitors confirmed her wildest dreams! The Lord, the God of Israel, was going to bring down the mighty walls of Jericho.
He was going to set Rahab free from her captivity.
I, too, had an extraordinary encounter. I realized that nothing and no one could set me free… except God.
His Son’s lifeblood brought down on the walls that imprisoned me… they could no longer hold me.
I was set free from my captivity.
Rahab’s life was never the same. She was transformed from the inside out. Her situation changed completely. God called her from her captivity to live freely. She became an ancestor of Jesus Christ.
My life has never been the same since Jesus saved me.
Once, my destiny was condemnation and separation from God. Now my destiny is eternal life. I have been transformed from the inside out.
My situation still looks bleak on the outside sometimes. There are still sources of worry and fear that threaten to steal my freedom.
But by God’s grace I do not give in… because I am free!
