real honesty: what i’m looking for

Happy couple painting.

By RTF Staff Writer Jamin Goeker

If you happen to be human and you’re reading this, then the chances are that you are going to relate to what I’m about to say: I have an idea of what my future spouse is going to be like.

And I have a little checklist in my head of what I’d like to see.

I try not to get too wrapped up in appearances. I look at the heart.

First, I want her to love God more than she loves me. Does that sound weird? It’s true though. Her relationship to God ought to be pretty high on her agenda. Otherwise, she will have a bunch of things that will probably go awry.

I hope she’s gracious and forgiving (after all, I’m not perfect). I pray she has the maturity to avoid conflict when possible but knows how to handle it when she can’t avoid it. I pray she’s down-to-earth and has the ability to see the best in people while guarding against their worst.

She’s also got to have a great sense of humor and be willing to have fun….it would be icing on the cake if she loved to read, play paintball, hike, and had a heart for coaching and ministry.

Understand, I’m not asking for perfection and knowing God, He might get a kick out of sending someone my way who contradicts some of the stuff on this list just because He can.

What does your list look like?

“…knowing God, He might get a kick out of sending someone my way who contradicts some of the stuff on this list just because He can.”

Isn’t that the truth? ;)

Reading someone else’s list makes me think about my own life more. Especially what you said about wanting the girl you marry to love God more than she loves you. That is really challenging to me. I mean, I can easily say that I want the same for my future spouse. But then I wonder if that is true for me. Do I love God more than anything? Will I love Him more than even the guy I want to marry? It’s very thought-provoking. It makes me want to be better.

My pleasure, McKenna.

Jennifer, yeah I definitely understand what you mean. It’s one thing to say something, but quite another to actually do it. I find myself sometimes asking the same thing sometimes (in reverse of course….I don’t plan on marrying a guy ;)
