real rant: expectations

Warning from the author: I’ve been told there are parts in this song that sounds bitter.

Let me say now, I did not intend for it to come across that way.

When I wrote this song, I wrote from what I’ve observed and experienced a little myself. My intention is not to vent, but to bring up a point I believe is important to note.

If you want to talk about it, just let me know. I’m always all ears about what any of yall have to say.

Every guy fears,

Seeing his girl in tears

Knowing it’s his fault,

Feeling her pain like a lightning bolt

He knows what’s wrong,

So he decided to write this song

For every girl who demands,

Prince charming with roses in his hand

Let me say this now,

Give you girls a shout out

No guy’s perfect,

That’s my verdict

(chorus)

What you want is unfair,

Setting up my heart to tear

Leaving you confused,

Your spirit bruised

Everyone wants a fairytale,

But no one wants the role that entails

Give me line,

Freedom to an opinion that’s mine

Is it right to expect perfection,

When none of us has reached our destination?

Show me a prodigy,

I’ll show you someone who aint for me

But girls aint the only ones with faults,

The only ones who don’t act like adults

We guys expect beauty queens,

To be Christian girls but not Bible Barbie

(Chorus, preferably by a woman)

(man/woman together)

I hate frustrating you,

By the things I say and do

Just remember,

I’m a victim too

You have hopes and dreams,

But you’re stuck with me!

The beauty queen, (man)

And a prince without armor that gleams (woman)

Wow, what a great reminder. I know as a girl, I wish and hope for a perfect guy, so it’s important that I often remind myself that no human is perfect. I need to be fully satisfied with God before I start to expect a guy to satisfy me, because he’s human and he’ll always fall short. God’s the only one who will meet my expectations and if I rely on him instead of a guy, I will be able to except that, though my guy is wonderful, he’s not perfect. I think this is excellent, Jamin!

Thanks a lot, Sarah. To be honest, I expected to have an airstrike called in on me after writing this. lol

I feel like I do need to make a quick point. I am NOT saying to throw out standards and expectations for your future “beauty queen” or “prince charming.” In other words, don’t think I’m saying to go hit the bars to find your perfect match. God has someone amazing in store for you, but just realize from the start that he/she is human and that person will fall short of perfection.

Again, if anyone wants to talk, you know where to find me.

No airstrikes here! Although I was solidly convicted… Actually, it was more like a confirmation/reminder of what God has been teaching me lately. . . How could I demand perfection from a guy when I cannot offer it? And I liked what you said about none of us being at our destination.

Good, good stuff. Thank you.

My pleasure, Abbie.

Jonathon, maybe I can get you that one of these days…maybe I could try singing it too, but that airstrike would PROBABLY get called in on me this time. haha

I think posting it with the actual tune would be great. No airstrike or any other attack coming from me. I loved the meter it flowed really well for me. Thanks for writing it.

Those lyrics you wrote are beautiful and touching it reminded me that I won’t ever be perfect and it also reminded me to have reasonable expectations for my future husband, thank you so much for sharing.
