real crazy: banana underwear

One of my friends recently called my boy and I “green”. I wasn’t sure if she meant we were naïve… or eco-friendly. Of course those two labels are synonymous in our small town, where recycling places you in the same gossip category as an eco-terrorist.

I have to admit – my boy and I are slightly on the green side. We’re not obsessed with it, but we try to do things like wash our tin foil, scrub our cat litter, and fertilize our garden with our own septic system. Just kidding about the tin foil.

Despite our sharp bent toward green-ness, I was shocked and horrified by one over-the-top green invention that recently made the news: banana underwear.

Reuters.com reported last week that the Australian company, AussieBum, has created a line of eco-friendly underwear made of 27 percent banana fiber, 64 percent cotton, and 9 percent lycra.

But the company said not to worry – you won’t have to avoid the monkey exhibit, since the underwear don’t actually smell like banana.

On the other hand, they said, the underwear are “absorbent”.

Too late for the absorbent part, AussieBum. I laughed so hard I definitely needed it when I read about your new product.

This article made me laugh, BJ! AussieBum, lol. That’s a great product name.

The tin foil thing *is* funny and I’ll tell you why: my grandfather washes out sandwich bags and reuses them! I am not kidding nor am I talking about the kind that say reusable. He just washes out your everyday sandwich bags.

He will also wash out those cheap red cups you buy at the grocery store for $2.50 a bag and re-use and re-use and re-use them. I’m serious. Every time I visit him, his house is neat. Always.

You should hold a contest or something to figure how who is the greenest (and weirdest!). :)

That’s too funny, Deb! Yes, I wonder what we could give away for a green contest… maybe some recycled tin foil Christmas tree ornaments… You crack me up :)
