real devo: handling change

handling change

By RTF Media Editor Jamin Goeker

There is a time for everything, and a season for every activity under heaven. – Ecclesiastes 3:1.

I grew up as a military kid, which means I didn’t stay in one place for long. I’ve lived in Oregon, Montana, Texas, Alaska, and then Texas again, leaving friends and a unique lifestyle at every location and taking a homesick heart with me.

After a while, I started fearing change and didn’t want anything to happen out of the ordinary. I didn’t like to make friends; what was the point in getting to know people if I would just have to say goodbye in 3 years?
I now know that there is a better way to deal with change.

First off, I learned to expect it. As the Bible says, there is a time for everything. Things will change in your life whether you try to change them or not.

Second off, I learned not to fear it. Change was and continues to be something I have no control over, but I know God has my back and He’s going to work everything out to my benefit.

And thirdly, I learned that trying to forget about my memories wasn’t the best way of handling homesickness. There are a lot of memories I have from the places I used to live and the people I used to know on a day-to-day basis and I was robbing myself of valuable experiences because it hurt to remember them.

I decided to cherish my memories but not cling to them. I decided to learn from them, the good and the bad, and move on towards the future.

There is a time for everything as the Bible says and that includes change. Think of it as a new beginning.

Great devo, Jamin! Like you, I’ve moved several times, and I’ve slowly learned to embrace change, not ignore it :)

Thanks. So where all have you lived? When my dad joined the military they told us we’d see the world…while I lived with them, we saw mostly different parts of Texas haha

Great piece, Jamin! I was on the opposite end. I had to watch most of my friends move away. They promised to keep in touch but I knew after about a year of writing letters, they would move on to new friends. Tough stuff!
