real poem: to fear, my old friend

woman enjoying wind

by RTF Editor BJ Hamrick

What if I could breathe without you
Choking out my air?
What if I could sleep without you
Stripping my dreams bare?

What if I could love without you
Shouting through my mind?
What if I could write without you
Haunting every line?

What if I could trust without you
Tugging at my heart?
What if I could love without you
Tearing me apart?

What if I was taken from you
Every breath and dream?
What if all your plans were shattered
Every evil scheme?

What if goodness overwhelmed you
Darkness turned to light?
What if I was free to live
And you were free to die?

What if you could see me dancing
Now that you are gone?
What if you could hear me shouting
Out my victory song?
