We’ve all seen those heart-wrenching programs where children in third-world countries walk around looking for something to eat. Have you ever noticed that most are barefoot?
Walking is a primary mode of transportation in developing countries and can be harmful unless the feet are protected. Walking over hard-packed roads riddled with stones and sticks can cause cuts and sores which can easily become infected. Sometimes these wounds even lead to amputation or disease caused by soil-transmitted parasites.
How can this be prevented? By simply giving a child a pair of shoes.
After a trip to Argentina in 2006, American entrepreneur, Blake Mycoskie, began working to supply shoes to developing countries through his self-created company, TOMS Shoes. So far, TOMS has given over 150,000 pairs of shoes to children in need through their unique One for One model. The One for One is a simple premise: for every pair you purchase, TOMS will give a pair of new shoes to a child in need.
TOMS has been supported by the Clinton Global Initiative, Element Skateboards, Dave Matthews Band, Hands & Feet, and Hawk Nelson, and has even been featured on an AT&T commercial.
Of course, the biggest supporters are the consumers. I own a pair of TOMS myself and absolutely love them. They’re comfy, stylish, and help make a difference in a child’s life. Want a pair? Then check out: www.tomsshoes.com.
TOMS may be the “Shoes for Tomorrow” but they’re making a difference in the world today.
