real interview: halee matthews part ii

This week RTF  editors B.J. Hamrick and Halee Matthews played a short game of Truth or Dare. They both opted for truth… from paying for meals with quarters to being mistaken as drunk at a Bible study… you can find the whole truth here.

(To read Part I click here.)

  • BJH: What’s your Favorite color?

haleematthewsHM: Green, of various shades. My kitchen is lime-y green, but I love dark green too, along with various shades of blue-green (teal, turquoise, etc). Yours?

We have this weird connection — obviously — because we both love green. Or maybe we’re just artists. Yeah. We’re just artists. (Because to be honest, I embarrass Halee too much for us to have a soul-connection. Just ask her about the time I invited her to lunch and paid entirely with quarters.)

It’s true! And you thought I got my food in a different line because it was moving faster… Honestly though, it was hilarious! The poor cashier was trying to make you feel better, talking about how much they needed quarters as you made these little piles next to the register. And the whole time you were explaining how you had been doing some cleaning and discovered the quarters, which clearly needed to be used. Somehow, every time we hang out, we end up with a hilarious story. I wonder why that is…

  • So what hobbies (besides paying for your food with quarters) do you enjoy?

There are other hobbies besides writing? Just kidding. I’m not THAT lame. I love to bike, swim, kayak, and do anything outdoors (minus putting worms on a hook). Pretty much anything that involves spending time with My Boy.

Aww, so sweet! But I’m with you there. I think hanging out with my guy is pretty fantastic too. And again, we’ve got some crazy similarities: I love being outdoors- hiking, nature photography, or just sitting under a tree, writing. I also absolutely love reading (well, okay, that one’s kinda obvious, right?), dancing, acting, listening to/creating music, and pretty much attempting anything creative.

  • What can we expect to see from you in the future at RTF?

I am a bit unpredictable at times, but this I can tell you for certain: you will see creativity, a down-to-earth perspective, and a unique style in everything I write. And what about you, BJ? What are you bringing to the table?

You can expect a lot from me behind the scenes — I’ll be sharing the work of our awesome staff writers, as well as popping in for a word of encouragement every now and then. You can also expect to see some fun contests and prizes in the near future.

  • What is something people would be surprised to learn about you?

bjhamrickI was once accused of being drunk at a Bible study. The truth was, I ate one too many helpings of casserole, got dizzy, tripped, and somehow wedged my rear end between the legs of a folding chair. Then I laughed hysterically. Unfortunately, no one laughed with me.

Oh no! Clearly they didn’t have a sense of humor because I think that’s hilarious! Then again, I’m used to your um.. special talent of bringing humor to any event.

Um, let’s see.. something people would be surprised to learn about me. I have a special relationship with time. Instead of setting my alarm for typical times like 8:00 or 8:30, I set it for 8:02 or 8:24. See, I think every minute, being an equal 60 seconds, deserves equal respect. Plus, I any time I see “typical,” I run away.. far, far away. If there’s no real reason for doing something a certain way, I find a more unique way to approach it. Life’s too short not to live creatively.

  • Okay, let’s end with this: What inspires and motivates you to write?

Mostly I write when people get tired of listening to me talk. The inspiration comes from not wanting to lose all my friends by talking about myself so much.

(And we are so grateful! Just kidding! I love talking to BJ any time.)

If you want a serious answer, though — it’s this: I don’t want everything God has redeemed in my life to go to waste. I want my friends and others to know that if He can meet me where I am, He can do it for them too. What’s your writing motivation?

I think I’m trying to avoid insanity! I have an active imagination and an immensely creative mind. Combine that with a passion for language and you’ve got either someone who ends up with words whirling around her brain which eventually drives her over the edge or a compulsive writer. As you can tell, I chose the latter (mostly). Writing became my passion even before I knew how to spell. I figured since God placed this passion in my soul, I should use it for His glory.

  • How can we contact you?

You can reach either Halee or BJ at realteenfaith@gmail.com. (We love talking about ourselves in the third person.)

Now it’s your turn. We’d love to hear all about you. Leave a note in the comments section so we can connect!

You paid for the meal in quarters? That made me laugh. :)

Sadly, it is true. Not one of my finest moments. :)

Halee, nice to meet you! BJ, nice to learn a little bit more about you.

Halee, I do agree with your philosophy on time. This morning my alarm went off at 8:03. I like getting up at “special” times!

hey everybody, I’m glad to be here! =)

BJ really did pay in quarters, and she counted them out and stacked them up on the counter. I bet they never forgot her. =)

Derek, so glad you agree about the time! I like looking at life differently. It makes everything significantly more interesting.
