Phil Wickham: Cannons
Alternative/Pop/Worship
A review by Ben Campbell, 16, RTF Guest Writer
Phil Wickham possesses beautiful, God given talents. Between his voice and his wonderful ability to conjure up images of heaven, I have fallen for his music.
Images such as cannons exploding in the night proclaim the existence of God. The whole CD is more or less a series of quick sermons. The best examples of this would have to be Cannons and True Love.
Cannons explains to the listener that creation is exploding with evidence of a creator.
True Love speaks of our Lord’s glorious sacrifice through an effective use of imagery. Listen to these lyrics: When blood and water hit the ground, walls we couldn’t move came crashing down. We were free and made alive, the day the true love died….
There is a great mix of songs from the Slow Sailing on a Ship to the quick and powerful After your Heart.
His passion for Jesus Christ is seen throughout the album. You can’t listen to any of these songs and question his love for Jesus Christ.
Must I Wait? kicks of the album by showing man’s desire to be with God and in a closer relationship with him. After your Heart is an anthem of believers crying out to each other, and to God, saying, “Let’s be the revolution that lives for holding nothing back”… “We’re after your heart.”
The song is catchy and is a good stage to display Phil Wickham’s voice.
Desire speaks of the believer’s sincere desire to better their personal relationships with Jesus Christ. The song is one of my personal favorites and you very well may find yourself singing it over and over again. The words as well as the music, especially the intro, are gorgeous in You’re Beautiful.
The song has a majestic feel to it that makes you feel closer to Jesus every time you listen to it.
His voice is always the thing that stands out. I never became uninterested with his voice. The words in the songs are what really sets him apart from all other worship bands. When it comes to poetic, picture painting lyrics he is in a class of his own.
While I believe that this is a CD worth purchasing, if you’re like me and are looking for singles for your ipod, that you will never get tired off Wickham delivers.
These are the songs that I have on my ipod: True love, You’re Beautiful, After your Heart and Desire.
