Real Devo: Issues of the Heart
by: RTF Staff Writer, Debra Weiss

“But those things which proceed out of the mouth come forth from the heart;” ~ Matthew 15:18

I’m often tempted to think how I speak doesn’t matter, but it does! According to Jesus, the way I speak portrays my heart.

Words. Are they pure? Compassionate? Or laced with anger or hatred?

If I think pure thoughts, I will speak purely. If I think kind thoughts, then I will say kind things.

Get away from everything and spend some time with God today. That’s what I must do. I need to ask Him what does my heart REALLY look like? Examine how I’ve been speaking to those in my life (whether they be friends, parents, or siblings).

What about you? Have your words been right? Have they been pure? Or compassionate?

If our words aren’t honoring God, then we aren’t alone as we change. We can ask God to forgive us and He helps each of us make a sincere change.

Jade, What a powerful devo! I know that this is a battle that we all struggle with, and yet it’s so important. People that don’t know about Christianity or faith may base their perceptions solely on what they hear us say. My heart is to share who God is, so my words carry that weight–and that opportunity.

“Gosh don’t get so worked up”, “Can’t you take a joke?” and “It just slipped out of my mouth, no big deal”. These are common expressions we hear everyday! What the poeple saying these things don’t realise is that is IS a big deal. What we say reflects who we are. Some things we say can scar someone for life, yet still people think what we say is unimportant. People should speak more respectfully and kindly, because the way they speak is partly what poeple think of them. See a neglected son grow up upset because his father never told him he loved him, or a lover telling their so-called soulmate that they are a terrible person and then the victim commmiting suicide or watch a president announce something that changes the lives of every living person on the planet and then you’ll know that words are important.Good job, Debra.
