Crawl
By Derrick Hanisch, Guest Writer, 21
One of my favorite bands is Superchick. Sad, but true. One of my highlights of Sonshine was seeing them perform. I even stood in line to get a poster autographed. It was really cool. Yes, while Superchick does sing about being a one girl revolution, and about how every girl is beautiful, they have some really cool lyrics.
I was listening to their newest CD today. I’ve listened to it a lot, and there’s one song that really stands out to me. It’s called “Crawl”:
How long will this take?
How much can I go through?
My heart, my soul aches
I don’t know what to do
I bend but don’t break
And somehow I’ll get through
’cause I have you
And if I have to crawl
Will you crawl too?
I stumble and I fall
Carry me through
The wonder of it all
Is you see me through
Oh Lord, where are you?
Do not forget me here
I cry in silence
Can you not see my tears?
When all have left me
And hope has disappeared
You find me here
And when I have to crawl
Will you crawl too?
I stumble and I fall
Carry me through
The wonder of it all
Is you see me through
When everything I was is lost
I have forgot where you have not
When I am lost you have not lost me
You have not lost me
I’ve had a craptastic summer. YouthWorks! was amazing, then I got sick and had to go home. A week later my girlfriend and I broke up. What a peachy summer. There have been some highlights, though. Sonshine was a big one. Also, hanging out with friends that I didn’t think I’d be able to see until mid August. At first I was throwing myself a pity party because my summer was sucking so much.
One of my friends helped pull me out of that, though. She told me the analogy about how when we live in regret and sorrow we dig a hole. The longer we mourn, the deeper the hole gets. All we have to do is stand up, and see that the hole isn’t as deep as we thought. Once we realize that we can climb out of the hole.
I really like that song above. When all seems lost, the Lord will carry us through. Humans fail. I’d call myself a good friend. I’ll to almost anything for friends. Man, I’ve done some stupid things in the name of friendship. I’ll go the distance for a friend. Yet, I’ve let friends down before. I’ve failed big-time before.
Even when people, when friends, fail us, God will never. When we are lost, God has not lost us. When we’re in the dark pit of despair God is standing next to us, prompting us to stand, giving us a way out of our Misery, out of the hole we’re in. When all seems lost, it’s not, because God will never let us go.

I really enjoyed this, Derek. I hope the rest of your summer turns out better!

Derek,
How very cool…the analogy of standing up. I hope the Holy Spirit will bring this image to my mind the next time I crawl into the hole!
