Real Bible Study: 7 Steps

7 Steps to Wise Decisions

By: Debra Weiss, RTF Staff Writer

For wisdom is better than rubies, and all the things one may desire cannot be compared with her.  Proverbs 8:11, NKJV

Many of us, as teenagers, are at a point where every decision—no matter how small—has the potential to shape our futures for good or bad.

But God has not left us to make our own decisions. He offers guidance to those who are willing to seek His counsel.

I have found that there are seven steps to wise decisions.

Number ONE

Read Proverbs daily. Proverbs is a collection of thirty-one passages on every topic from money to marriage and offers practical wisdom for today’s problems. Get into the habit of reading Proverbs before you face tough decisions.

Numero TWO

Ask God for wisdom daily. “If any of you lacks wisdom, let him ask of God, who gives to all liberally and without reproach, and it will be given to him.” – James 1:5, NKJV

THREE

Enter the situation with prayer. Whatever you’re facing, nothing is as comforting as entering into a situation knowing that God is with you.

NUMBER FOUR!

Never make an impulse decision. Never.

Did I say never?

If it’s Monday, Tuesday, or Wednesday, then give your answer on Friday of that week. Later than that? Promise to have an answer by the next Monday.

SINCO

Pray about the decision. Is this something God-honoring? Is it Biblical? Is it of “good report” (Philippians 4:8)?

SIX

Seek counsel. God never intended for our lives to be solo flights. Seek the counsel of a mature Christian. He or she may be able to offer a new perspective on a difficult decision.

AND THE FINAL TIP, NUMBER SEVEN

Do.

Whatever the Lord asks you, wherever he commands to you go, do it. Even if it isn’t easy, there is a peace that comes to our hearts when we know we are obeying our Lord.
