Prince Caspian
Rated PG for epic battle action and violence
Review by Jamin Goecker, RTF Staff Writer
How do you exceed the perfection of Andrew Adamson’s last Narnian movie? Better effects, faster action, excellent costumes, new characters, and dazzling scenery. This 2-hour and 20-minute film kept me awake at 2 o’clock in the morning.
Caspian enters a wardrobe within the first 5 minutes. He’s not stepping into a new world; he’s escaping his uncle’s plot to murder him. The Pevensie children (Peter, Susan, Edmund and Lucy) have lived in our world a year since their last adventure into a wardrobe. A magical horn warps them back to Narnia to help Prince Caspian in his struggle against his uncle Miraz. If the Narnians are defeated, they will be annihilated.
The action doesn’t give you time to text message in this movie. Fighting sequences ranges from castle courtyards to forests and the conflicts continue with strife within the Narnian camp. But what message does Adamson convey?
Our efforts aren’t good enough to achieve what we set out to do.
Peter tries leading the Narnians by himself without Aslan’s help. In the end, he sees all his efforts couldn’t accomplish what Aslan did in minutes.
“All that you know is about to change.” This is a statement by Aslan. In the midst of war, Lucy’s childish trust in the majestic lion is portrayed as the most lethal weapon in the story. Aslan remains the same no matter what happens.
Andrew Adamson takes liberties with the plot and characters. The changes add more depth to a story for children and kept me unsure about the next scene even after reading the books. Peter and Caspian engage in a power struggle throughout the picture. Susan has a crush on Caspian and she plays more of an active role in the battles.
Go see Prince Caspian today! If you entered Narnia in 2005, you’ll want to do so again.
