“Make Me Thy Fuel” by Army Carmichael
From prayer that asks that I may be
Sheltered from winds that beat on Thee,
From fearing when I should aspire,
From faltering when I should climb higher,
From silken self, O Captain, free
Thy soldier who would follow Thee.
From subtle love of softening things,
From easy choices, weakenings
Not thus are spirits fortified,
Not this way went the Crucified,
From all that dims Thy Calvary,
O Lamb of God, deliver me.
Give me the love that leads the way,
The faith that nothing can dismay,
The hope no disappointments tire,
The passion that will burn like fire,
Let me not sink to be a clod:
Make me Thy Fuel, Flame of God.

That’s an interesting poem!

I think this poem was by *AMY* Carmichael. not *Army* Carmichael
sorry, it was probably just a typo, but I had to point it out ^_^

THANK YOU for posting this poem! I was looking for the text by googling “prayers ask sheltered winds beat faltering climb higher” (no quotes) and found your site.
An inspiring poem for sure, which I read in William MacDonald’s TRUE DISCIPLESHIP iirc.
A few nits.
“Amy”, not “Army”, is correct. I believe the title is “Flame of God” and if I’m not mistaken, the first line reads “prayers that ask…” rather than “prayer that asks…”.

Thanks Collin. Love the nits. It shows that you are paying attention (and maybe I am not!). Keep coming back.
