At times, hope is all that we have to hang on to. The world can be crashing down around us in overwhelming darkness and despair, yet deep inside, a gentle voice reminds us that we are not alone.
Philip Yancy observes in Where is God When it Hurts? that Jesus never gave a poor or suffering person a speech about accepting his or her lot in life or swallowing without complaint the “medicine” that God had given him or her. In fact, he seemed unusually sensitive to the groans of suffering people and set about remedying them. And he used supernatural powers to heal, never to punish.
