Real Article: Creation Festival 2006, a Seattle reporter shares his POV

What does Creationfest, a rocking concert for thousands of teens, look like to a Seattle reporter?

Thousands worship, then rock out at Creation Festival
By D. PARVAZP-I REPORTER

GEORGE — It’s over for another year. Roughly 22,000 Christians prayed, rocked out, networked and maybe even checked out the baptismal pool in the dust bowl known as the Gorge Amphitheatre. [Read entire article here]

An excerpt from the article:

Still, there was a sense among most here that Christians are the underdogs in this country and that they are a true subculture.

“It is very telling of the direction our country is going in,” said Anna Long, 18, of Mukilteo, who was waiting in line with her 13-year-old brother, Stewart, for singer Bethany Dillon’s autograph. Long looks like a typical Capitol Hill hipster, with hazel eyes and two freckles on her lower lip, giving the impression of a removed piercing.

“It’s the enemy that is trying to shut it out,” said Long, referring to the Christian lifestyle and its music.

And that enemy is …

“Satan,” she said. “It’s a shame that Christian music isn’t more prevalent. … It’s something that makes you feel good.”

According to the 2001 U.S. Census, 79.8 percent of Americans identify themselves as Christian, down from 88 percent in 1990. There is a feeling that their faith is under attack, which, in turn, seemed to have a galvanizing effect on the crowd. Nineteen-year-old Mary Hardt, in her faux snakeskin hat and striped green and white dress, said this was her second visit to the event, and that the thing the Great Falls, Mont., native loves most about it is that it makes her feel as if she’s “not so alone in believing and in having faith.”
